January is Glaucoma Awareness Month
What are the risk factors for developing Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that can damage the optic nerve, leading to vision loss and blindness. Several risk factors are associated with the development of glaucoma. These risk factors include:
👉🏻 Age: The risk of glaucoma increases with age, especially in individuals over 60. However, glaucoma can occur at any age.
👉🏻 Family History : If you have a family history of glaucoma, particularly in first-degree relatives (parents, siblings), your risk may be higher.
👉🏻 Intraocular Pressure (IOP): Elevated intraocular pressure is a significant risk factor for glaucoma. However, not everyone with elevated IOP develops glaucoma, and some individuals with normal IOP may still develop the condition.
👉🏻 Thin Cornea: A thinner cornea may be associated with an increased risk of glaucoma.
👉🏻 Nearsightedness (Myopia): People with nearsightedness may have a slightly higher risk of developing glaucoma.
